Chichen Itza, which means “at the mouth of the well of the Itzaes”, was the most important city of the Mayan civilization. It was called like that because in this
city there is one of the most significant cenotes in the region, which is the “Sacred Cenote”; here many people of other Mayan cities used to make offerings to their Gods.
In this breathtaking site, that was declared a World Heritage by the UNESCO, you will not only find one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, which is the Kukulkan´s Temple
or best known as “El Castillo” (the Castle), but you will also discover a magic place, where you can appreciate a perfect harmony among the amazing architecture of the Mayas,
their knowledge, and nature.
Most of the structures at Chichen Itza were built to coincide with astronomical phenomena that they were studying, like for example “The Castle” which was built in a specific
position in order to register and observe the spring and autumn equinoxes, and to see their god Kukulkan slithering down the stairs to fertilize their land. Other example is the
“Observatory”, where they used to study the stars, every single window and door of this building is aligned with a star or a planet in the sky.
Nowadays, there are approximately 17 constructions opened to the public, many of which have partially been restored using the same materials as the Mayas.
